KARACHI, Feb 22: The provincial government has decided to wind up jetties in Ibrahim Haideri by the end of this year and make operational the Korangi Fish Harbour.
This was decided at a meeting of Sindh Fisheries Minister Sardar Manzoor with Federal Food Minister Yar Muhammad Rind here on Sunday, stated a source privy to the meeting.
The provincial government will co-operate with federal government to make the Korangi Fish Harbour functional, the source added. He said the meeting decided that processing plant would be installed in Korangi Fish Harbour while other facilities would also be provided, after which jetties would be wound up.
Till the Korangi Fish Harbour is made functional, personnel of Sindh government would be deputed to receive toll. The revenue generated this way would be spent on welfare of fishermen, he added.
The matters regarding distribution of amounts generated after the functioning of Fish Harbour would be decided later. The provincial government had received complaints that jetties established with the funds of district councils had been monopolized by influential people, who were receiving exorbitant taxes from fishermen and earning millions of rupees.-PPI
