LJC to review many laws tomorrow


ISLAMABAD, Feb 12: The Chief Justice of Pakistan and Chairman of the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan, Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui, will chair a meeting of the commission here on Saturday. The commission, besides other matters, will consider the following agenda items:

Amendment in Section 197 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 to enable general public to file suit under the court of law for removal of public nuisance.

Amendment in Section 351 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 to enable the trial court to proceed against any person found to be involved in the commission of an offence even though not initially charged by the police.

To repeal certain provisions in the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 which become redundant. Amendment in Section 197 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 and Section 6(5) of the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1958 pertaining to sanction of the president or governor for initiating proceedings against an accused public functionary.

Amendment in Section 67 of the Pakistan Penal Code 1860 to rationalize the sum mentioned as punishment of fine. Amendment in Limitation Act 1908 with respect to period of limitation of filing revision petition.

Amendment in the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 to obligate the police arrest a person without warrant to communicate to him the particulars and grounds of arrest, inform him of the right to bail, if permissible, and to have one family member or friend to inform of the fact of the arrest.

Amendment in the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 in respect of the procedure for recovery of penalty by way of forfeiture of bond. Addition of a new section to the Pakistan Penal Code to criminalize the practice of Vanni/ Swara (giving female in marriage as consideration for compounding disputes/ offences). -APP
