KARACHI, Feb 11: There is a need for developing such varsities in the private sector, which, besides providing quality education, should consider education a non-commercial affair.

This was stressed by an eminent educationist and the chairman of the Usman Institute of Technology, Prof Manzoor Ahmad, who was speaking as chief guest at the All Pakistan Student Seminar, organized by the UIT in collaboration with the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Pakistan (IEEEP) on Wednesday.

The seminar on "Applications of computer technology for the advancement of trade, industry and utility services in the country," was also attended by professional electrical and electronics engineering professionals and faculty members from engineering institutions.

Dr Manzoor said the basic idea behind holding of the seminar was to provide a platform for engineering students from all over the country to exchange technical knowledge on various applications of computerization and automation.

"Engineering students should also take full advantage of engineering professionals' institutions like IEEEP and seek guidance from engineering professionals," he added.

Dr Manzoor was of the view that the emphasis must be on the application of knowledge rather than rote learning. Chairman, IEEEP Local Council, Engr SK Pervez, lauding the holding of the moot, pointed out that the annual event received the largest number of papers.

Dr M Salim Khan, UIT director, presented the vote of thanks. Engr Touseef Rajput, the convener of the moot, described its aims. Senior educationists from, Hamdard University, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, IEEEP, Karachi Centre, also expressed their views on the occasion. Some engineering students presented papers at the seminar. -APP/PPI
