HYDERABAD, Feb 11: The water and Sanitation Agency suspended water supply to City, Latifabad and Qasimabad talukas by closing the Hyderabad Development Authority filter plant on Wednesday to protest against the registration of an FIR against Wasa officials.

The Site police had registered a case against SDO Saleem Siddiqui and sub-engineer Aleemuddin on the complaint of SHO Javed Shaikh under section 319, Qisas and Diyat, after five-year-old Aisha Gulzameen drowned in an open drain of the HDA.

The employees, including CBA union, All Pakistan Clerks Association and employees' action committee leaders, said they initially suspended the water supply for two hours and it would be restored after their protest was over today.

They further said in coming days they would close the filter plant for four hours. They warned that they would shut down the filter plant if the FIR against the officials was not cancelled.

Meanwhile, the DPO, operations, A. D. Khwaja and the SP, City, Mujahid Akbar Aziz, told this correspondent that the FIR against the WASA officials had not been cancelled, adding that it was up to the investigation police to decide about the FIR.

HEARING ADJOURNED: A bench of the Sindh High Court, Hyderabad, on Tuesday adjourned hearing in the acquittal appeal against 40 persons, including Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi and other party leaders, as Sindh additional advocate general Masood A. Noorani sought time to ensure that notices were served on the respondents.

Dr Magsi's counsel Yousuf Leghari requested the court to exempt the respondents from attending the court. The Sindh AAG said the point could be considered later as notices had to be served on the respondents first.

The Sindh government had filed separate criminal acquittal appeals through AAG Noorani, praying the court to set aside a verdict of the sixth additional district and sessions judge which had acquitted the respondents.
