KARACHI, Feb 6: Acute water shortage continued to persist in various parts of the city, forcing the residents of the affected localities to either purchase private water tankers at exorbitant rates or consume sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.
The hard-hit areas include Kharadar, New Challi, Ranchorre Lines, Jubilee Cinema, Burns Road, Pakistan Chowk, City Railway Colony, Clifton's Block 2 and different sectors of Orangi, Baldia, Surjani and North Karachi.
Residents of the affected localities deplored that although acute water shortage had been persisting in their localities prior to Eidul Azha, the officials seemed least interested in restoring normal supply.
"We have lodged a number of complaints in this regard with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board's executive engineers concerned and even with the chief engineer, but so far none of them have succeeded in rectifying the fault responsible for persisting water shortage," a councillor of Orangi Town's Union Council No 9 regretted.
SEWAGE: Filthy water gushing out from different choked gutters often remains stagnant on a number of streets in the vicinity of Hassan Apartments.
People residing in and around the Hassan Square complained that although dirty water coming out from some choked gutters and sewage lines has become a matter of routine, the KWSB's officials concerned are taking no measures to rectify the persisting problem, despite a number of complaints lodged with them.
"On the one hand, a considerable quantity of water had been leaking from a pipeline, near Hassan Square and, on the other overflowing gutters, are causing unhygienic conditions in the locality," an elderly resident of the apartments remarked.
The sewage was not only causing damage to the streets but was also causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians.
