ISLAMABAD: Judgment on plea about Ahmedis reserved

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Feb 6: The Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi bench, on Friday reserved judgment on a petition of the Majlis Tahaffuz-i-Khatm-i-Nabuwat.

The Majlis had sought a direction to the election commission through which it should require Ahmedis to submit an affidavit while applying for registration in electoral rolls.

Justice Maulvi Anwarul Haq heard Advocate Babar Awan and Deputy Attorney-General Tariq Chaudhry before reserving the judgment.

The government counsel stated that the petition should be disposed of as the chief election commissioner had already issued the notification, requiring the Ahmedis to show their religious identity for registration in electoral rolls.

The petitioner wants the election commission to give effect to the 2nd amendment, made to the Conduct of General Elections Order 2002, by making the halfnama part of electoral rolls before their printing and distribution.

The petitioner, Maulana Abdul Waheed Qasmi, alleged that the CEC had wilfully avoided to give effect to the 2nd amendment whereby the said affidavit was to be made part of electoral rolls.
