Afghan official, family die

KABUL, Feb 1: An Afghan official and seven family members were killed in a bomb attack by suspected Taliban guerrillas and their allies in central Afghanistan, regional officials said on Sunday.

Khalifa Sadaat, mayor of Deh Raud district in Uruzgan district, and his family were returning from shopping on Saturday when their vehicle hit an explosive device planted near their house.

Provincial governor Jan Mohammad Khan said three of Sadaat's children were among the dead. "It was a remote-controlled bomb," he told Reuters by satellite phone. Six suspects have been arrested. -Reuters
