DADU, Feb 1: Police claimed to have killed a bandit in an encounter near Fazal Agro village some 90km from here on Saturday but villagers insisted that they had killed a farmer in a fake encounter at the behest of a landlord.

According to the Thariri Mohabbat police, on a tip-off, a police party surrounded the area and killed the bandit but his four accomplices escaped.

The body of the killed man - Khadim Hussain Janwari, 25, resident of Ghulam Janwari village, Mehar taluka - was brought to the Mehar Taluka Hospital for autopsy.

The police have registered a case. On receiving news, a large number of villagers gathered at the hospital and also held a demonstration at the Mehar link road on Sunday.

Saeed Janwari told the protesters that Janwari was a farmer who was killed by the police in a fake encounter at the behest of an influential landlord. Another villager, Deedar Ahmed, also termed the incident a case of fake police encounter.
