RAWALPINDI: SSP killed as train hits car

RAWALPINDI, Feb 1: A senior superintendent of police, National Police Academy, Islamabad, was killed on Sunday after a train banged into his car at a rail crossing at Hattar dragging it hundreds of meters away, police said.

The SSP, Aman Pasha, travelling in his car (IDL-8514) tried to avoid the accident but failed. The accident took place at about 12.30 pm when the SSP heading towards Islamabad from Hattar tried to beat the passenger train coming from Kohat.

"The train dragged the car hundreds of meters away killing the SSP on the spot," Inspector Tahir told this reporter. His body was pulled out of the mangled car and shifted to Islamabad. The body was sent to Lahore after offering funeral prayers at the Police Line Headquarter, Islamabad.

Earlier, an unidentified person was run over by a vehicle and killed in the Civil Lines area. Police said a critically injured person, believed to have been hit by a vehicle, was found lying on the road. The injured, who is yet to be identified, was shifted to the CMH where he expired.

Meanwhile, three vehicles were stolen from different parts of Islamabad. Muhammad Sarwar lodged a complaint with the Margalla police stating that his Suzuki jeep (IDG-6127) was stolen from outside a mosque in G-9, while Shahabuddin lodged a similar complaint with the Margalla police stating that his motorbike (IDD-1168) was stolen from outside his house.

Saeed Akhtar, lodged a complained with the I-9 police stating that his car (ACK-853) was stolen from in front of his house. Policeman injured: A policeman was shot and injured when a man opened fire on a police party near Sadiqabad police station on Sunday night.

The incident occurred when during a chase, a suspect opened fire on a police team on Service Road Sadiqabad. As a result, a policeman, Rabnawaz, was injured. He was shifted to the RGH where he is said to be in critical condition. The man managed to escape. When SHO Sadiqabad Mirza Fazal was contacted, he said a police party was on its way to arrest some persons when they opened fire.
