KARACHI: Suspect killed in shootout with police

KARACHI, Jan 26: A bandit was killed, while his three accomplices were arrested by police after an encounter at a cell phone shop in Site Area on Monday. Site Town Police Officer Imran Shaukat told Dawn that he received information that several armed men were looting a mobile phone shop in Metroville, Site.

As the police reached the spot, the bandits opened fire at them. During the crossfire, a bandit, who was later identified as Saadullah Khan alias Saboor, was killed, the TPO said, adding that the police arrested the three armed men, identified as Mumtaz, Niaz and Rahim from the spot.

Three TT pistols, along with Rs13,000 and cell phones, were recovered from the bandits, the TPO added. The shop owner, Asim, was also injured in the firing, the police said.

ACCIDENTS: Three persons died in separate accidents in different parts of the city on Monday. A young man, Mohammad Bachal, 35, died in a road accident at Sharae Faisal on Monday.

Police said that the deceased, a security guard at a private security agency was crossing the road, when a speeding bus knocked him down, killing him on the spot.

His body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for legal formalities. The police said the errant bus driver, identified as Jehanzeb, was arrested by the police following the accident.

In another accident, a cyclist died in a hit-and-run accident in New Karachi. Police said that cyclist Abdul Ghani, 30, was knocked down by an unknown vehicle in sector 11-J.

The victim was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A young man, Mohammad Illyas, 23, died on the spot after falling from a crane in Site, in the premises of a factory on Monday.
