KARACHI: Rockets, ammunition seized

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Jan 23: Police found five rockets and ammunition from an abandoned house in Hyderabad Colony on a lead given by an arrested suspect on Friday. It is the fourth recovery of weaponry during the last one week.

"The arrested suspect Shamim Ahmed alias Shami led us to an abandoned house, where we found five rockets, and several bullets of sub-machine gun and light-machine gun," a senior police official said.

Shami, a key member of the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, was arrested by Sharae Faisal police in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Jan 17. He led the police on Jan 18 to an abandoned house in Mehmoodabad, where a huge cache of explosives, including two packs of 10kg bombs, was found. The house was being used as a factory for making explosives, police said.

A senior police official said that Shami was believed to be involved in the Bible Society bomb explosion on Fatima Jinnah Road, in which 14 people were wounded. He said the two packs of 10kg bombs, recovered from Mehmoodabad, were identical to that of the bomb used in the Bible Society explosion on Jan 15.

On Jan 20, police seized 11 Russian-made grenades lying abandoned along a storm water drain near Pahar Ganj in North Nazimabad. The same day, Samanabad police on a tip-off raided a house in Shafiq Colony and found 500kg Calcium-Ammonium-Nitrate and 32kg vaseline, used in bomb making.

Police said that Shami's name was included in the 'Red Book' - issued by the government containing 39 names of the most wanted religious extremists. Of 39, the sources said that seven, including Shami, had been arrested and one surrendered to the police.

Sources said that Shami was a close associate of Asif Ramzi, who was killed in an explosion in Korangi in December 2002.
