KARACHI, Jan 13: Sindh Home Advisor Aftab Ahmed Shaikh on Tuesday assured both Islami Jamiat Talaba and All Pakistan Mohajir Students Organization of holding a high-level meeting within two weeks to review and implement the existing draft Code of Conduct.

The meeting would be attended by Sindh Education minister, EDO, Higher Education, city government, and representatives of teachers and students' organizations, he said presiding over a meeting at his office, which was attended by Sindh Home Secretary Anwaar Haider, DIG (Operations) Tariq Jamil, director-general, Rangers, Sindh, several town police officers and other concerned officials. He also urged both rival student groups to adopt "policy of restraint".

IJT was represented by its General Secretary Shoaib Ahmed and Osama Shafique, while APMSO Joint Secretary Siraj Pasha and Central Information Secretary Tahir Yousuf attended the meeting.

Both the groups had clashed with each other at KU campus and Federal Urdu University, Science Campus, in which several activists from both sides sustained injuries.

According to a Sindh Home department official, both the student groups signed a provisional code of conduct at the meeting, which said that only genuine students in uniforms would be allowed to enter educational institutions.

He said draft code of conduct further stated that weapons of all kinds, either licensed or illicit, would be strictly prohibited. Both the groups agreed to also avoid chalking against each other, distribution of handbills, hoisting their flags and placing posters spreading hatred, within boundaries of educational institutions, he maintained.

However, he said that IJT demanded formation of a committee to review and implement the existing draft Code of Conduct, signed by both the student organizations.

Sindh Home advisor assured them of holding another meeting within next two weeks at his office to address their concerns, he said. An IJT office-bearer said they had written a note on the draft saying, "above mentioned points in the draft will be reviewed and implemented by another committee."

According to him, IJT had reservations regarding monitoring and implementation of the code by Rangers and police. Meanwhile, the APMSO has denounced the manhandling of teaching and other staff at Islamia Arts and Commerce College by the activists of a student group. APMSO has also condemned the same student group for pelting stones at the students of Urdu varsity on Tuesday.-PPI
