BENONI, Jan 12: A rejuvenated bowling performance helped West Indies to their first triumph in a first-class match in South Africa as they beat Easterns by 33 runs at Willowmore Park in Benoni on Monday.
West Indies dismissed Easterns for 251 after tea on the final day to give themselves a much needed boost ahead of the fourth and final Test against South Africa which begins at Centurion on Friday.
West Indies are currently 2-0 down in the series. Fast bowlers Vasbert Drakes and Corey Collymore in particular bowled with purpose and control as Easterns only fleetingly threatened to reach their victory target of 285.
Drakes finished with the pick of the figures, claiming three for 37, while Collymore took two for 46. Only while opener Andre Seymore was at the crease did Easterns look as though they could claim a rare victory over a touring side.
Seymore scored 79 before he was fifth out, trapped lbw in his crease by Drakes. He batted for a little over four hours, facing 167 balls and hitting nine boundaries.
Seymore's partnership of 66 for the fourth wicket with Pierre de Bruyn (34) was the most substantial of the innings, but was broken with the second ball after lunch when de Bruyn edged a good delivery from Ravi Rampaul through to wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh.
