KARACHI, Dec 7: A retired professor and his wife died in mysterious circumstances. Their decomposed bodies were found in their house in Malir on Sunday.

Police said that bodies of Prof Ghazi Khan Jakharani, 70, and his wife, 65, were found from their house in Gulshan-i-Akbar, Malir, after their neighbours complained of the stench emanating from the house.

Police came, broke down the door and found the decomposed bodies of the couple, which were over 15 days old.

Police said Mr Ghazi had retired from the Jamia Millia College Malir. The bodies were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsy.

The couple were childless. The cause of the deaths could not be ascertained immediately. TPO Shah Faisal Town, Asif Ajaz, told Dawn that the couple were suffering from cancer and were in poor economic conditions.

According to the area people, after his retirement Prof Jakharani gave tuitions some for some time, but discontinued teaching due to his poor health, the TPO said.

The couple might have ended their lives, but there were no signs of hanging. if they had consumed poison or some tablets it would be clear after the chemical report, the TPO added.

Following the autopsy, the bodies were handed over to Edhi Foundation. Their burial took place in the Edhi graveyard in Mochko, police said.

SHOT DEAD: A young man was shot dead while his brother was injured in an armed robbery in North Karachi on Sunday morning.

Police said that four armed men barged into a house in sector 7-C, and held the family at gunpoint. Syed Saqlain Husain Shah, 25, tried to resist and the armed men opened fire, badly injuring him and his brother Syed Sabtain Husain Shah.

Both the brothers were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Saqlain was pronounced dead on arrival. Sabtain was admitted for treatment at the hospital.

CARJACKING: Bandits either hijacked or stole 61 vehicles — 13 cars and 48 motorcycles — in the past one week in various parts of the metropolis.

According to police statistics, six cars were taken away at gunpoint by bandits and 13 were stolen in North Nazimabad, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, F.B Area, Clifton, Defence, Saddar, Lyari and Ferozabad.

Fifteen motorcycles were hijacked and 36 stolen in F.B. Area, North Karachi, Clifton, Landhi, Lyari, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Saddar, Aziz Bhatti and Saeedabad, Zaman Town and other areas.

Police also claimed to have recovered 46 stolen cars and motorcycles in the past one week from different parts of the city.
