KARACHI, Nov 22: A man was shot dead in what police claimed to be an ‘encounter’ at a township in Sohrab Goth police limits, in small hours on Saturday.

The Police claimed that they were on a routine patrolling and as they reached near a mosque in Jannat Gul township, the police van came under attack.

The police returned the fire and a man, later identified as Jahanzeb, 26, suffered bullet wounds and died on the spot, the police claimed, adding that a TT pistol was recovered from him.

His accomplices managed to escape the scene, the police said.

However, the area residents, disputing the police claim said that a group of people was sitting at a corner when a police van appeared and the officials coming out of the van opened straight fire without any justification or warning.

The people of the area, hearing gunshots, ran for their lives.

Jahanzeb, a labourer and an Afghan national, got hit by the police firing. However, the police denying the allegations, was sticking to its claim.

The police reached the spot and shifted the body to a hospital for autopsy.

The police said it was a case of suicide. The body was later handed over to the family for burial.
