Flintoff to lead for first time

DHAKA, Nov 4: All-rounder Andrew Flintoff will lead England for the first time when he takes charge in a warm-up one-day match against a local Bangladeshi team on Wednesday in the absence of rested captain Michael Vaughan.

All seven players who joined the squad for the three-match one-day series against Bangladesh have been included for the game, an England official said on Tuesday.

Marcus Trescothick, who struck 113 in the first Test but suffered a thumb injury while going for a slip catch in the second, has also been rested along with seamers Richard Johnson and Rikki Clarke, both recovering from a viral infection.

But they are expected to be fit for the first one-day international to be played in Chittagong on Friday.

England won the Test series 2-0.

England team: Andrew Flintoff (captain), Andrew Strauss, Vikram Solanki, Paul Collingwood, Anthony McGrath, Ian Blackwell, Chris Read (wicketkeeper), Gareth Batty, Ashley Giles, James Kirtley, James Anderson.

Harmison fit

LONDON: Fast bowler Steve Harmison should be fit to rejoin the squad for next month’s test series against Sri Lanka, the England Cricket Board’s chief medical officer said on Tuesday.

Harmison missed the second Test in Bangladesh last week after injuring his back in the first Test victory where he took nine wickets.

Dr Peter Gregory said scans showed there was no serious cause for the pain Harmison felt during his match-winning performance in Dhaka.

“Steve will continue to undergo treatment and strengthening work for his back and I am very optimistic that he will rejoin the England test squad in Sri Lanka,” Gregory said.
