KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31: Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was sworn in as Malaysia’s prime minister on Friday when Mahathir Mohamad stepped down after 22 years in power.
Mr Abdullah took the oath of office before King Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin at the national palace in Kuala Lumpur in a ceremony broadcast live on national television.
Abdullah Badawi, 63, becomes Malaysia’s fifth prime minister since independence from Britain in 1957, taking over from Southeast Asia’s longest-serving leader, who first announced his decision to retire in June last year. —AFP
