Wasim routs HBL with 8-wkt haul

LAHORE, Oct 31: Fine batting by Afzal Shah and tailender Asif Butt helped Railways to post a respectable 295 in the first innings against Higher Education Commission (HEC) in the Patron’s Trophy qualifying round at Railways Stadium on Friday.

Afzal scored 146-ball 75 with nine boundaries while Asif contributed 50 off 70 balls with five fours, before Railways were all out in 83 overs. Asif with Khalid Bashir (40, 90 balls, four fours) also  added useful 75 runs in their ninth wicket stand. Off-spinner  Muhammad Shoaib was the pick of the bowlers  with three for 33 while leg-spinner Atif Ijaz bagged two for 50.

In other pool “C” matches, Javed Hayat (40) and  Naveed  (37) added  useful  66-runs in the fifth wicket stand to guide Zarai Taraqiati  Bank Limited (ZTBL) to get an adequate  first  innings total of 292 against National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) at  Country Club, Murdike, according to a message received here.

Pacer Mohammad Javed (3-56) and Aleem Mosa (3-85) were the main wicket takers for the bankers. By close of play, NBP were 13 without loss.

At  Gymkhana  Ground, Okara a gutsy century by  Shakeel  Sharif (118)  enabled Pakistan Air Force (PAF) pile up 302 for nine in first innings against Service Industries. Shakeel faced 185 balls. Off-spinner Rizwan Ahmad was the chief wicket taker with 4-67.

In pool “D”, an eight-wicket burst by medium-pacer Wasim Khan helped Sui Gas to bundle out Habib Bank Limited for 97 in just 22.3 overs.

Wasim conceded only 41 runs in 11.3 overs with three maidens. His victims included Saleem Elahi (0), Younis Khan (15), Hasan Raza (0) and Atiq-uz-Zaman (4).

Later, Sui Gas were 196 for one in first innings and had earned 99 runs first innings lead.

Muhammad Hafeez was batting at 93 with 17 fours with Misbah-ul-Haq (47, seven fours, one six, 72 balls).

Allied Bank Limited (ABL) were in sight of victory against Pakistan Education Board (PEB) after an eventful day at the SAGA Ground, Sialkot.

ABL had taken a 200 runs lead by bowling out PEB in first innings for a paltry 52 in 16.3 overs. Pacers Abdur Rauf (5-36) and Tanvir Ahmed (4-15) did the damage.

The bankers, declared at 252 for two wickets scored off only 42 overs with opener Wajahatullah Wasti hitting an 107 (15 fours, two sixes, 121 balls) and Farhan Adil (65, 11 fours, 73 balls).

PEB in the second innings were 131 runs behind to avoid an innings defeat with six wickets in hand by scoring 69 for four in the second innings at the stumps.

A century by Ashraf Ali (107 off 170 balls) guided SAGA to 292 in their first innings against Leo International at Jinnah Stadium, Gujranwala.

For Leo, medium-pacer Mustafa Bashir took four for 83 while leg-spinner Usman Nabi finished with 3-69.

Our Rawalpindi Sports Reporter adds: PTCL’s paceman Muhammad Khalil and slow left arm bowler Muhammad Hussain shared eight wickets on Friday as KRL were dismissed for a low 213 on the first day of their Patron’s Trophy qualifier.

Saeed bin Nasir led the scorers with a knock of 89 in which he struck 13 boundaries while Yasir Arafat hit a brisk 41 laced with six fours and a six.

At the close of play at the KRL Stadium, PTCL were eight for no loss with Aqeel Mukhtar batting on 7 and Babar Naeem yet to open his account.

In another match, Army were bowled out for only 160 by Wapda bowlers spearheaded by left arm spinner Farooq Iqbal who took three wickets for just seven runs. Others to take the honours were Aqil Ahmed, Waqas Ahmed and Kashif Raza, all of whom had two scalps each.

Zubair Watto topscored for Army with 44 as rest of the batsmen struggled to get runs.

Wapda were 45 for the loss of Adil Nisar by the close of first day’s play.

Meanwhile there was no play at Islamabad’s Shalimar Cricket Ground where POF were to take on PTV because of a wet pitch. Summarised scores:
