KARACHI, Oct 26: Mr Mohammad Qasim’s rank outsider, High Standard showed a clean pair of heels to her rivals in winning the Nawroz Ali J. Bhamani Cup run over six furlongs at the Karachi Winter Gymkhana race held here today at the local turf.

High Standard after showing promise in her early career went off colour and after running nowhere in her last six starts made her rivals bite the dust when she hit the front after coming out of the box and never looked back to coast home eight lengths ahead of betting ring favourite, Lover’s Lady who found the scorching pace set by the winner too hot.

In the race Trillion Winner tipped in these columns ran a poor race. The highly bred colt no doubt is yet to touch his peak he should not have run such a backward race. His running throughout the six furlong journey was simply mind boggling.

The credit for the brilliant performance of High Standard goes to young trainer, Tanveer Abbasi and to some extent rider Tariq Mahmood who showed real good judgement of pace.

Another horse which stunned the followers of form was Lovely Concept who after running out of frame in his last 21 starts was backed down by the connections from four to one to 20 to 100 on and won like a champion without even giving any anxious moments to his supporters. He was sent out by trainer Allah Jurdio who has the blessings of the people in power. Nobody from the Managing Committee dared to question the running of Lovely Concept ever. It was a slap in the face of the people sitting in the Glass House.

During the day, M. Nasir, last year’s champion jockey, rode a brace of winners showing his cool and nerve. In the fourth race astride Fantastic Fighter he was slowly away from the gates but nursed his charge and after allowing him to settle down in the straight looked for the opening on the outer rail and timed his challenge in grand style to coast home an easy winner.

He reproduced his brilliance when astride Mega Hit who has the reputation of missing the jump got away slowly but nursed him till the bend where he brought his charge within striking distance and then timed it well to score a short-head verdict over Departure On Time to score a popular win.

Besides M. Nasir, jockey. Sher Mohammad also scored a double through Star of The Day in the fifth race and Lady’s Love in the concluding event of the day where the stable put it’s faith in the filly despite the fact that she was carrying a crushing weight of 9-8. The next races will be held on Sunday.
