KARACHI, Oct 21: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has ordered the shifting of terminuses of Balochistan-bound oil tankers and buses to the outskirts of the city and sought the files pertaining to the shifting.
Mr Khan stated this on Tuesday, while visiting 150 acres of land, designated for the Balochistan-bound oil-tankers, three years ago, from Macch Goth to Gas Canal Bridge.
The office-bearers of the Oil Tankers Association informed the Nazim that tanker operators were ready to shift stands to city outskirts but demanded basic facilities for the new place before the shifting.
Responding to the demand of the association, Mr Khan said that only those tankers would be allowed to enter the city which were registered with oil terminal of the oil company concerned and added that all oil companies would also establish their offices at tanker stands for registration of the tankers.
The Nazim also visited the 40 acres of land, designated for Balochistan-bound buses, in Baldia Town and appealed the transporters to cooperate with the city government in the larger interest of the city by shifting heavy vehicles outside the city.
Oil Tanker Contractors’ Association Chairman Yousaf Khan Shahwani, President, Haji Gul Mohammad Afridi and others also accompanied the city Nazim.
Earlier, the Nazim also visited Sheeren Jinnah Colony. The area people gathered and informed him about the problems confronting them.
City Nazim directed that repair work of water and sewage lines be completed before the construction of Sheeren Jiannah Colony Road, besides cleaning of sewage nullah of area.
He asked Saddar Town Nazim on phone to improve the sanitary conditions of the area.
He also paid surprise visits to many distribution points of the PSO and Shell and deplored the poor arrangements of PSO.
He was told that share of PSO in distribution of oil in the country was 70 per cent, but it lacked the facilities including sitting arrangement, however, on the other hand Shell had better arrangements with the provision of air conditioned hall, bath rooms, Mosque and other facilities.
City Nazim said that the city government would try to construct tanker stand on the outskirts of the city with the cooperation of transporters on priority basis.
He observed that these steps were aimed at improving sanitary conditions in the SJ Colony and near the coastline and added that a high-level meeting would be held soon to solve the problems being faced by the people due to these oil tankers.
Meanwhile, the city Nazim said that the city government attached great importance to the welfare of its employees, particularly those in lower grades.
He expressed these views while speaking at the balloting ceremony for distribution of cycles among the city government’s employees, working in grade 1 to 6 on Monday night.
He said that these cycles had been brought in the city in 1997, but were laying in schools, however, the city government had got these repaired, which were now being distributed among its employees.
Karachi DCO Mir Hussain Ali, Abdur Rashid Baig, Qazi Sadduruddin, Abid Ilyas and others were also present on the occasion.
ROAD REPAIRS: The city government has completed the second phase of repair works of roads, devastated by rains two months ago, while the third and final phase of the work is in progress.
Priority has been given to those roads about which most complaints were received, that include road form Manghopir to Low Lane Bridge, Garden to Pak Colony, Major Anwar Shamim Road, Site Town, Mewa Shah Graveyard Road, MA Jinnah Road, Shahrah-e-Liaqat to Reegal Chowk, Marten Road, Jail Chowrangi, to Teen Hati; Iranian School, Block 5, Clifton Road, Switzerland Consulate, Block 7, Clifton Road.
Other roads include Turkish Consulate Road, Chakro Nullah to Shamaa Shopping Centre, Shah Faisal Colony, 3,000 road to Malir Bund, 12,000 Road Korangi, Korangi Crossing to PAF Base Korangi, Yaseenabad to Comprehensive High School Gulberg Town, Altaf Brailwi to University Road, S.M Taufiq Road and road from S.M. Taufiq Road to Teen Hati and Liaqatabad Flyover.
Nawab Siddique Ali Khan Road to Khilafat Chowk, Road from Shahrah- e-Chishti to Khilafat Road, including Graveyard Road, Road from Khilafat Chowk to Ibn-e-Sina Road, road from bridge to Zaiuddin Hospital, Qalandri Chowk to Anda Mor, Road from 200 chori road to University Road up to Jauhar Chowrangi, 500 Road, Surjani Town Scheme No 41, Karsaz Road from Landing to Shah-e-Najaf Imam Bargah, Road from Kala Board to National Highway towards Malir River were also completed.
Repair work has also been completed on Abul Hasan Isphani Road in Gulshan-e-Iqbal 3, University Road from Hasan Square to Jail chowrangi and Sir Shah Suleman Road from Hasan Square to Stadium.
Work on 1,000 Road from Jam Sadiq Bridge to Singer Chowrangi and 12,000 Road continues in the third phase and is expected to be completed till Nov 15.
Under the directives of city Nazim Naimatullah Khan, repair work is being carried out round the clock to save the citizens from the traffic problems.—PPI
