KARACHI: Grenade blast at factory

KARACHI, Oct 21: Three labourers were injured when a low-intensity grenade exploded at a dying factory in Pak Colony on Tuesday.

Police said a Suzuki pickup carrying drums entered the factory in the Jahanabad area to unload the drums. As the vehicle stopped, a blast occurred inuring three labourers, Waheed Khan, Abdul Rehman, and Malik Shah. They were taken to a hospital.

“It was a locally-made grenade. All the three were discharged from the hospital after treatment and are now in police custody where they are being questioned”, said DIG Operations Tariq Jamil.

He said the other people present at the factory were also questioned, and the matter would be investigated.

FIRING: A religious leader escaped unhurt in an attack near a mosque in Sharfabad on Tuesday evening.

Police said Abdullah Shah Mazhar, leader of Tehrik-al-Furqan, was getting off his car near Jama Masjid Sharfabad in the evening, when two men on a motorcycle fired at him. He lay down and escaped unhurt.

Mazhar, a head constable on duty at the mosque’s entrance, opened fire in the air, forcing the assailants to flee.

DEATH IN RAID: A man wanted in many criminal cases died in a police raid in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Tuesday night.

Police said the investigation branch of Jamshed Quarters raided a place in Noman Complex in Gulistan-i-Jauhar to arrest Mohammad Laiq alias Chacha.

Sensing danger, Laiq jumped off the multi-storey building and died on the spot. The body was sent to a hospital for autopsy.

Police arrested one Amir alias Pundit during the raid.

Police said Laiq was wanted in a number of criminal cases including a Saudabad case. He, along with others, was named in the FIR 5/2003 at the Saudabad police station on Jan 13. He and four other suspects were arrested. As they were taken to the police station they attacked the police with an explosive and fired at them. Two policemen were killed and the others were wounded. The suspects fled the scene.

Laiq had been an activist of Sipah-i- Sahaba in the 1990s, police said.
