QAU admn wary of starting MSc classes

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Oct 20: The Quaid-i-Azam University on Monday remained undecided whether to start MSc classes this week or wait till things came under its complete control, university sources told Dawn.

Following the killing of a History Department student during Punjab and Pakhtoon councils’ clash on October 13, the university was closed for an indefinite period.

However, through an official statement, the university has been opened for research students — M.Phil and PhD programmes — from Monday, and they (students) are also allowed to check in hostels.

The sources said the university administration was sceptical about the security on the campus following reports that members of the Pakhtoon Council might seek revenge for the death of their associate, Naseeruddin, during the recent clash.

Though the administration has decided in principle to allow a heavy presence of police on the campus and vacation of boys hostels, it does not want recurrence of any violence, they said.

Reviewing university’s security from every angle may take some time before MSc classes are restarted since mostly the masters’ level students are involved in groupings that often result in confrontations.

A senior university official told Dawn that the vice-chancellor was quite anxious to open the university as soon as possible, but not before a fool-proof security apparatus was put in place.
