LAHORE, Oct 20: The National Accountability Bureau, Punjab, has arrested an auditor, Amjad Ali Khan, of the Collectorate of General Sales Tax, Multan, for causing a Rs3.915 million loss to the national exchequer.

Auditor Amjad Ali Khan will be produced in an accountability court on Oct 21 for obtaining his physical remand.

According to a news release issued here on Monday, Auditor Amjad Ali Khan got two firms — Goodluck Impex and Pak Exporters — registered with the Collectorate of General Sales tax, Multan, on the basis of forged documents. The accused pursued the registration process personally.

According to rules, the applications for the registration of firms should have been sent to the collectorate by registered post. Instead, the accused presented the applications himself and got them registered.

The firms were not registered with the deputy registrar of companies. No income tax record of two firms was available in the office of the Multan regional commissioner of income tax.

The accused also opened bank accounts of the firms in the names of fake individuals in two banks at Multan.

After registration with the Sales Tax Collectorate, the accused filed a refund claim by submitting bogus documents. The accused misused his official position as auditor and got a sum of Rs3.915 million fraudulently transferred in the accounts of the two firms.
