KARACHI: Legal aid cell for prisoners


KARACHI, Oct 8: Sindh governor Dr Ishratul Ibad on Wednesday approved establishment of a legal assistance cell for prisoners and announced an initial grant of Rs1.2 million for it.

Presiding over a meeting at the governor’s house regarding conditions of jails and problems of prisoners, the governor appreciated the services of Justice (Rtd) Nasir Aslam Zahid for the welfare of female prisoners. Mr Zahid will be heading the cell.

In the first phase, the cell as a pilot project will function to provide legal aid to female prisoners. It will be established adjacent to the Prison and will have the assistance of best legal experts.

The meeting considered the simplification of procedure for providing parole facility to female prisoners as per law, so that they could get relief without undergoing unnecessary problems.

Later, accompanied by the participants of the meeting the governor visited the women’s jail adjacent to the central prison. He talked to female prisoners and listened to their problems.—APP
