LANDI KOTAL (Khyber Agency), Oct 5: Armed tribesmen after ransacking blew up a Khasadar checkpost in Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency on Sunday morning.

The Khasadars posted at the checkpoint took shelter in a nearby telephone exchange when the Shalobar tribesmen armed with Kalashnikovs attacked the post.

The tribesmen after ransacking the post, dynamited it with explosives. No human loss or injury was however reported as the protesting tribesmen also fired gunshots in the air.

“The attackers would be taken to task,” said the Bara tehsildar, when approached for comments over the incident.

He said the administration had served notices to Shalobar elders to explain reasons for the attack.

The checkpoint at Shalobar Chowk was established by the political administration six months ago after a shootout between out laws and Khasadars, which resulted in the killing of a proclaimed offender, Gul Wali, and injuries to two Khasadars.

Reacting to the firing incident, the administration had demolished a number of shops and kiosks owned by Mirankhel tribe. The administration had information that some out laws were frequently visiting the area and had become a den for unlawful activities.

The Shalobar tribesmen had for a long time been demanding compensation for the demolition of shops and establishment of a check post over their combined property, which the political administration was reluctant to pay.

MAN KIDNAPPED: Armed men in Bara kidnapped Zaman Khan from the Shalobar area while he was on his way home late on Saturday evening.

The kidnappers also exchanged fire with the activists of a local peace committee when their car was signalled to stop. They managed to escape in the dark.

JOURNALIST WARNED: The Ittehad Tanzim-i-Ulema, Bara, on Sunday served notice on a local journalist for his reporting about the activities of the Tanzim.

The ITU, known as peace committee, had threatened to demolish the house of the journalist, Nasrullah.

Nasrullah is also the president of Khyber Agency union of journalists.

The journalist union had lodged a complaint with the political administration.
