HYDERABAD, Oct 1: Referring to the greater Thal canal and the Kalabagh dam, the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee has said that the rulers are trying to impose unilateral decisions on Sindh.

This was stated by committee convener Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, who is also leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, while briefing journalists after a meeting of the committee held at the residence of MNA Syed Amir Ali Shah Jamote here on Tuesday night.

The meeting was presided over by Mr Khuhro and attended by Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo, Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader Afzal Gujjar, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl) leader Taj Mohammad Nahyoon, Sindh Water Committee general secretary Abrar Qazi, MPA Ali Nawaz Shah Rizvi and others.

Mr Khuhro told journalists that the action committee meeting had decided to organize a water conferences in Karachi on Oct 12 and a public meeting here on 23. He added that at the gatherings, water experts, farmers, assembly members and political leaders would inform the masses about the dangers confronting Sindh due to water projects.

The People’s Party Parliamentarian leader said that the committee wanted to send a message to the rulers that the Sindh masses were not prepared to allow the government to commit any more excesses against the province as far as its water rights were concerned.

He said that the rulers considered themselves above the law and the institutions had no regard for the feeling of the people.

Mr Khuhro said that keeping in view the predominant importance of the water issue and repercussions on Sindh due to the construction of the canal and the dam, the committee had decided to continue the struggle to its logical conclusion.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Palijo said that the democratic forces were opposing the policies of President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

He said that the Baloch and the Pakhtoon had supported the struggle of the action committee against the disputed water projects.

Mr Palijo said that time was not far when the “anti-people and anti-democracy” government would not be in a position to stem the tide of the protest.
