Probe against tax officials ordered

Published September 30, 2003

ISLAMABAD, Sept 29: The federal tax ombudsman (FTO), Justice Saleem Akhtar (retired), has asked the Central Board of Revenue (CBR) to initiate a probe against two tax officials for conducting an illegal inquiry against a complainant.

The ombudsman observed that the inquiry report was manifestly ‘table inquiry’, having no value or worth because the officials did not even consult the office record let alone visiting the place of business. He further said the complainant had not yet returned from abroad and there was no business activity on his part. The combined assessment for the three years was a typical example of highhanded and arbitrary dispensation, where net profit for each year has been determined as income divorced from realities and fact obtained on the ground, he said.—Our Reporter
