ISLAMABAD, Sept 24: Two rival women parliamentarians on Wednesday took their altercation to parliament and demanded action against each other for the incident that happened on Tuesday.

According to eye-witnesses, PML-Q Senator Gulshan Saeed and PPP MNA Naheed Khan exchanged hot words during the opposition’s protest sit-in outside the Parliament House on Tuesday. The two women parliamentarians were about to indulge in a physical fight when senior PPP members intervened and avoided it.

However, on Wednesday when Ms Gulshan was speaking in the Senate on a point of order about the incident, the ARD secretary was submitting a complaint to the National Assembly secretary on behalf of Ms Naheed asking the speaker to get registered a murder attempt case against the PML-Q senator.

In the complaint, Ms Naheed said the whole opposition was observing a token hunger strike against “unconstitutional address of Gen Musharraf” to the UN and was recording a protest against “military usurper” outside the Parliament House, when Senator Gulshan Saeed while “illegally riding in a government vehicle (IDG-143) arrived there aiming at provoking an untoward situation”.

The senator then started “hurling indecent slogans and asked her driver to run over” all the protesting MNAs, Ms Naheed said in her complaint.

She further said, “this is an attempt on the life of the parliamentarians aimed at intimidating them in order to pressurize them for their stand against illegal author of the LFO and his abettors”. Therefore, a criminal case should be registered against the PML-Q senator under sections 324 and 506 of PPC 1860, she said.

In Senate, the treasury members held an hour-long discussion on the incident and criticized the opposition for paralysing parliament. The discussion ended with the formation of an eight-member committee under Dr Khalid Ranjha to probe the incident. Other members of the committee are Kamil Ali Agha, Bibi Yasmin Shah, Babar Ghori, Abdur Razzaq Thaheem, Wali Mohammad Badini, Hamidullah Afridi and Mouhim Baloch.

Meanwhile, Ms Gulshan Saeed also submitted an application to the Senate chairman asking him to register a case against the PPP MNA for “criminally intimidating and harassing her.”

Earlier, Ms Gulshan alleged that Ms Naheed “slapped” her at the main gate of the Parliament House. She said Ms Naheed had blocked the gate and was not allowing any vehicle to get in.

The deputy chairman asked the woman senator to move a privilege motion in this regard and that he could not cancel the membership of Ms Naheed as she was the member of the National Assembly. He observed that the security staff and police officials were inefficient. Mr Khalil said he would ensure that the gates of parliament building would remain open all the time.
