KARACHI, Sept 21: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has said that under the Karachi Reconstruction Programme, six flyovers have been planned at city’s important round-abouts, besides passages which include Hino Chowk, Malir River, Korangi to Qayyumabad and Shah Faisal Colony to Korangi, Quaidabad, Sohrab Goth and Hasan Square.
He said tenders for these projects would be invited soon, while some major schemes on built, operate and transfer (BOT) basis would also be started soon, including induction of buses under the Urban Transport Scheme and Mass Transit Plan, with involvement of six foreign companies.
He stated this while speaking at a briefing by some reputed Swedish, German and British companies, which manufactured machinery and vehicles.
Welcoming the foreign investor, Mr Khan said that city’s law and order situation was much better now and environment was conducive for investment.
He pointed out that city’s infrastructure, specially roads, was badly damaged by heavy rains, but the city government had started repair work on emergency basis, simultaneously in five city zones, adding that the work would be completed in two months.
He said the damaged roads caused various problems for the citizens, specially the business community, and added that the repairs were delayed due to some legal problems, assuring there would be no more delay.
The Nazim said that president’s programme of reconstructing Karachi had started with the help of some stake-holders. He vowed that the city government would provide the businessmen and industrialists with a changed city to help solve their problems.
He appreciated president’s concern for the city, which was reflected through his “Taameer Karachi Programme.”
He said a committee had been constituted for monitoring the development works under the package.
The Nazim informed that sufficient funds had been allocated for the machinery required for development and reconstruction process.
He said the health department was also faced with the shortage of machinery and vehicles and the city government was taking measures in this regard also.
The representatives of international companies gave a briefing to Nazim about the machinery produced by them.
STUDENT EXCHANGE: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has called for frequent student exchanges between the cities of Lahore and Karachi, highlighting the significance of the both cities being declared as “Ideological Twin Cities.”
The City Nazim was speaking at a reception given by the district government for the position holders of Sindh and Balochistan Boards of Secondary School Education, on Sunday.
EDO (education), Anwar Ahmed Zai, also spoke to the students. The students, later, along with the Nazim and visited the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam and laid floral wreaths.
SHC: City Nazim said that the city government would continue extending grants for educational, welfare and literary institutions of the city.
He expressed these views while talking to former and present judges of the Sindh High Court, senior lawyers and office-bearers of the Sindh Bar, during his visit to the SHC library on Saturday.
The Nazim, on the occasion, handed over a cheque of Rs0.2 million to the SHC judge, Ali Aslam Jafri, as in charge of the library, for improvement and expansion, as he was apprised during his previous visit that the library was facing financial problems.
Mr Khan further said that despite limited resources he would keep serving such institutions.— APP/PPI
