KARACHI, Sept 11: “The city government has approved an amount of Rs80 million for repair of roads damaged by the recent rains, and all the roads will be repaired in two months,” said Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan while laying the foundation stone of the reconstruction of Amir Khusro Road here on Wednesday night.
He said the city had been divided into five zones and some 25,000 feet of carpeting would be carried out in each zone on a daily basis.
He said some people thought the Karachi development package was just an oral venture and would not be implemented. “But I assure the citizens of Karachi that not only it will be implemented, but a major portion of it will see completion in the first two years”.
He pointed out that the Karachi Port Trust had already issued tenders in that respect, while talks were going on with the Pakistan Steel and the Defence Housing Authority, and “they too will initiate the work soon”.
The city Nazim said it had been decided that only quality roads would be constructed which could not be damaged by rains, no matter even if it cost double the amount.
He said in the construction of roads separate rain water and sewerage water disposal arrangements had been made and a programme had been chalked out to disconnect sewerage from stormwater drains.
Naimatullah Khan said the credit for construction of Amir Khusro Road should go to Union Nazim Junaid Barkati.
Earlier, Town Nazim Abdul Wahab, Union Nazim Junaid Barkati and MPA Nasrullah Shajih also addressed the ceremony.—APP
