Gavaskar for review of ICC points system

BANGLORE, Sept 1: Indian cricket board’s technical committee on Monday called for an overhaul of the International Cricket Council ICC’s points system for multi-national one-day tournaments to avoid deliberate under-performance by teams.

Technical committee chairman Sunil Gavaskar said the committee felt that a losing team which did not concede a bonus point to the rival side should not be given a point, and also that a losing team which did concede a bonus point, should be slapped with a penalty point.

He told reporters that the committee felt that such a points system needed to be reviewed.

“This is to avoid a situation in a couple of triangular tournaments in the world a couple of years ago where a team which has qualified had given a bonus point to another team which they wanted to play in the final. So, we feel there should be (provision) for penalty point.” —PPI
