KARACHI: DHA to get enhanced water supply

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 31: Managing director of the Karachi Water and Sanitation Board (KWSB), Brig Asif Ghazali, on Saturday assured enhanced water supply, by two million gallons per day (mgd), to bring the total supply to eight (mgd), to the areas under the Defence Housing Authority (DHA).

Speaking at a reception hosted by the Defence Residents Society (DRS) at the Defence Central Library Auditorium, to bid him farewell as DHA administrator and to welcome Brig Maqsood Hussain as new chief of the authority, Brig Ghazali said that with recent rains there had been a lot of improvement in water level in reservoirs, particularly in the Hub dam.

He said that the KWSB would revert back to Hub source to cater to the water needs of those areas which previously came under defunct West district, which, he hoped would ease the water supply situation.

Responding to a point raised by DRS president Zafar Iqbal in his welcome speech, KWSB chief said the DHA was already being supplied enhanced water supply by one mgd, and he would further look into a possibility to increase it by another two million gallon.

The DRS president Zafar Iqbal also raised issues related to street lights, repair of roads and power fluctuation in the DHA, which were causing problems for the residents.

He urged the new administrator to take up the matter of allocating land for new graveyard as the old one had no more capacity.

He also asked the new DHA chief to reconsider the site for the proposed desalination plant and said the oil pollution created by a grounded vessel, Tasman Spirit, should also be kept in mind before further planning.

Brig Hussain, responding to some of the issues raised by the DRS assured that all out efforts would be made to remove the grievances of the area residents and also sought their cooperation in overcoming such issues as of garbage collection and cleanliness in the area.

Referring to the power problem, he said that he would take up the matter with the KESC managing director and hoped it would be soon resolved. He said that already two KESC customers’ service centres were working actively and claimed that the residents were satisfied with their performance.
