LG system contains flaws, says minister

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Aug 29: NWFP Minister for Science and Technology Hussain Ahmad Kanju has said that the existing local government system contains flaws that need to be removed immediately.

Speaking at public meetings in Charsadda district on Friday, the minister said the MMA government had planned to make the local government system responsive to and reflective of the needs and aspirations of the people and rid it of the flaws.

On this occasion, MMA district vice-president Charsadda Daud Jan Afghani, district Amir Jamaat-i-Islami Charsadda, Maulana Abdul Mastan Khan, Naib Nazim Tehsil Charsadda Mujibur Rehman advocate and a candidate of Al-Khidmat group for district Naib Nazim Alhaj Farman Ali Khan also addressed the gatherings.

The minister said the reason behind misunderstanding between the provincial and district governments was the ambiguity and a huge gap of powers in the existing local government system as, unlike in the past, the provincial governments had been bypassed and all the powers were transferred to the centre.

He said the government was making strenuous efforts to develop working relationship between the local, provincial and central governments, adding that 60 per cent due share of development budget of the district governments had already been released.
