SUKKUR, Aug 27: Hundreds of women held a protest demonstration in front of the DPO office in Mirpur Mathelo on Tuesday against the police and the Mari Gas Field administration.

The protesters were led by Zarqa Shar, daughter of peasant leader Mandhal Shar.

They cordoned off the office of the DPO, Ghotki, at Mirpur Mathelo and raised slogans against the police and management of the Mari Gas Field.

They demanded that the police should register an FIR regarding the killing of a woman, Manzooran Shar, by the police during an earlier protest demonstration at the gas field, and release an employee of the gas company, Jamal Nasir, who was the son of Mr Mandhal.

The DPO, Ghotki, called Zarqa Shar to his office and assured her that a case against the culprits would be registered at the Yaroo Lund police station.

When the protesting women went to the Yaroo Lund police station, the SHO immediately left and in his absence the other officials refused to register a case.

CONFERENCE: Later, while addressing a press conference, Zarqa Shar, said that the police has cheated us but our protest against the police and management of the Mari Gas Field would continue, till our demands are met with.

The protesters were demanding that they should be compensated for the land used for gas drilling.

Earlier, their protest had led to the suspension of drilling work at some wells of the gas field.
