KARACHI, Aug 27: The additional district and sessions judge, Karachi West, Akhtar A. Chaudhry, on Wednesday acquitted two workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in a carjacking case.
The activists — Iqbal and Danish — were booked by the Pak Colony police on Dec 10, 1996, for snatching a taxi from Sultan Mohammed.
The judge exonerated them from the charges for want of incriminating evidence.
#REMANDED:# Judicial magistrate, Karachi East, Ayub Bhatti, remanded two workers of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement in police custody for interrogation in a case pertaining to possession of illegal weapons.
The Al Fallah police produced Tariq Qureshi alias Tariq Bata and Hamid alias Boss before the magistrate, who gave the suspects in police custody till Aug 29.
Later, the police produced the activists before judicial magistrate, East, Javed Iqbal, and sought their custody in a case pertaining to an attempt to commit robbery in Korangi. The magistrate, however, remanded them in judicial custody.
#CONVICTED:# The additional district and sessions judge, Central, Mohammed Riyaz Shaikh, convicted a truck driver and sentenced him to 10 years in jail for killing a motorcyclist in an accident.
Juma Khan was prosecuted for killing the motorcyclist, Shaikh Mohammed Ali, on Nov 27, 2000, in the jurisdiction of the Gulbhar police. The judge ordered the driver to pay Rs275,000 as compensation.
The judge also sentenced Juma Khan to six-month rigorous imprisonment for reckless driving. The convict was fined Rs50,000.
