LAHORE, Aug 24: Jockey Shahid Rehman gave a scintillating display of horsemanship by riding home a brace of winners during the Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Sunday.
He first rode home 40 to 100 roan colt Great Boy, who put up a fine performance and simply sailed over his 15 rivals when landing a runaway success in the fourth race.
He then piloted home King Of Bhakkar to annex the sixth and feature event and complete a well-deserved double.
Trainer Mian Javaid excelled among trainers and had the distinction of sending out two winners. He first saddled Qaswa Princess in the third race and then sent out Great Boy in the following event.
Five favourites obliged the punters in a card of six events, all contested over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres. The only long shot to escape punters’ backing was Fifty Six Fifty Six in the second race.
The punters started the day on a happy note when even-money favourite Bone Crusher crushed his eight rivals to register a start to finish victory.
Long shot bay gelding Fifty Six Fifty Six won the second race to the great disappoint of backers of favourites. He beat fancied Madam Lorina by one length, who nosed out another long shot Meri Kajal to third place. Heavily backed Much Pleasure completed the board, a length further behind.
Fancied Qaswa Princess obliged the punters defeating Nazakat by about two lengths. Strings and Birju finished third and fourth, respectively.
Fancied Great Boy lived upto his status of 40 to 100 favouritism by claiming the fourth race. Second favourite Hunza ran second, three lengths behind with Hot Press and Little Master hitting the frame in the same order.
Fancied bay mare On On, who was thrice defeated to second spot in as much previous outings made amends and won the fifth and supporting event using runaway tactics. She beat Eastern Bird by about five lengths. Beena Roy Baby and Imagine Iff finished third and fourth, respectively.
The odds-on favourite gelding King Of Bhakkar produced a magnificent late burst of speed to win the feature event. He beat Moment To Moment by three lengths. Better Case led the field till the home stretch but lost stamina and faded out to third position with Flame finishing fourth among six runners.
