162 killed in BD by elephants

By Our Correspondent

DHAKA, Aug 24: The lingering fight between men and elephants has left 162 people and 22 elephants dead, and 348 others injured during the last five years in the country since 1997, Dhaka-based dailies reported on Sunday, quoting government run news agency BSS.

The report also said property worth about three crore takas was damaged during the fight.

There are as many as 200 wild, 100 migratory and 80 captive, elephants in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the country director of IUCN, Dr Ainun Nishat, reportedly said that elephants’ habitat and sources of food are being shrunk and walk ways being obstructed, due to human intrusion in the forest, provoking them to attacking people.
