MIRPURKHAS, Aug 21: Standing crops of cotton and sugarcane were damaged due to non-availability of water at the tail-end areas of the Jamrao and Mithrao canals which needed an adequate supply of irrigation water.
The areas which were affected are located in the Talukas of Kunri, Samaro, Kot Ghulam Mohammad, Umerkot, Pithoro, etc.
Water was being supplied at the head of the Nara Canal but irrigation engineers were not providing adequate water to the tail-enders, causing resentment among the growers and landlords who had been compelled to hold protest demonstrations and block the main roads for acceptance of their demands about the supply of water.
The protest demonstration, held in Kunri, was led by MNA Nawab Yousuf Talpur. The growers also held protest demonstrations in Samaro and Kot Ghulam Mohammad.
Talking to the affected growers, the MNA said that the areas were not being supplied water deliberately as bribe was being demanded from them.
The growers demanded that the government ensure supply of water to their areas as their crops were being deprived of water for the last one month and they needed water along with fertilizers.
