All jails overcrowded

LAHORE, Aug 17: Each of the 30 jails in the Punjab are accommodating much more number of inmates than the authorized capacity.

According to jail department sources, the total number of the inmates in jails of the province is 52,431 against the authorized accommodation capacity of 17,637.

Of these 34,920 are under trail, 11,703 convicts and 5,808 condemned prisoners who are living in miserable conditions.

The Rawalpindi Central Jail has the highest number of inmates — 5,191 against the authorized accommodation capacity of 1,894 prisoners. Of them 1,333 are convicts (including 15 women), 3,271 are under-trials (including 144 women) and 428 condemned prisoners.

The Sahiwal Central jail has the authorized capacity of 1,184 prisoners. At present, as many as 4,078 inmates have been lodged. Of them 817 are convicts (including three women), 2,740 under-trials (including 77 women) and 441 condemned prisoners.

The other overcrowded jails include Muzaffargarh District jail (891 inmates against the authorized capacity of 87), Sheikhupura District Jail (1,976 prisoners against the capacity of 322) and Gujranwala Central Jail (3,373 inmates against the authorized capacity of 560).—APP
