KARACHI, Aug 13: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has asked the departments and organizations benefiting from the city’s civic facilities, to extend practical cooperation for strengthening the city’s infrastructure.
He was addressing the Nazims and councillors during his visit to Liaquatabad, Gulberg, North Nazimabad, North Karachi, Gadap, Landhi and Bin Qasim towns.
The Nazim claimed that the 10-day long health and sanitation campaign had achieved overall good results, though it wasn’t a complete success. “The Nazims of towns and union councils have played a vigorous role,” he said.
He said if the campaign had not been launched immediately after the rains, the sanitary conditions in the city would have been worse with a and possibility of outbreak of epidemics.
He said the city government, with the cooperation of the towns and union councils, had started the campaign on an emergency basis without any prior planning and with resource constraints to offset the effects of the rains.
The Nazim said that garbage dumps which could have spread diseases had been transported out of the city and now a city-wide spray was being carried out.
He said the city government would also provide vehicles and required staff to the town administrations for undertaking fumigation in their respective areas, while it would be ensured that garbage was dumped only at the landfill. For that purpose, he said, garbage vans would be issued tokens.
He said that repair and carpeting of affected roads would start soon and the trenches had been filled to facilitate traffic movement.
He said that to cope with the complaints from F.C. Area the PWD would be contacted and encroachments on nullahs would be removed.
“We will have to work for the reconstruction and development of the city. People are not conscious of their rights because of deficient education, and thus the civic problems,” said the Nazim.
Earlier Nazims of the towns apprised the city Nazim of their problems and urged more financial resources for union councils.—APP
