HYDERABAD: Government warned of public reaction: Thal canal, Kalabagh dam projects

HYDERABAD, Aug 13: Leaders of the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee have said President Gen Pervez Musharraf will have to face reaction from the people if he visits Sindh to mobilize public opinion in favour of Thal canal and Kalabagh dam projects.
They said this at their token hunger strike camp outside the press club here on Wednesday, the third and final day of the strike.
A large number of people, including women, led by action committee convener and Sindh People’s Party Parliamentarians president Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo, Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi, Sindh National Front general-secretary Gul Mohammad Jakhrani, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F) leader Maulana Taj Mohammad Nahyoon, Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Afzal Gujjar and Jamaat-i-Islami leader Abdul Waheed Qureshi, observed hunger strike.
The protesters raised slogans against the rulers, Kalabagh dam and the Thal canal.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Khuhro criticized the government and the Water and Power Development Authority for announcing construction of the Thal canal and the Kalabagh dam.
He said the generals were trying to perpetuate their rule for an indefinite period.
He hinted at launching a 1983 MRD-like movement to force the government to shelve the water projects on the River Indus.
Mr Palijo said the people of Sindh would not allow the construction of the Thal canal and the Kalabagh dam.
Dr Magsi called upon the people to join the struggle against the two projects.
Mr Jakhrani, Mr Gujjar and others also spoke on the occasion.
CLASSES: The director, Institute of Information Technology, University of Sindh, on Tuesday announced that classes of BCIT and MCIT, evening programme, would start from Aug 18.
DATE EXTENDED: The dean, faculty of education, University of Sindh, has announced that the last date for submitting forms for admission to B.Ed, M.Ed and M.A, education, has been extended up to Aug 25.
MUSEUM: The director of the Institute of Sindhology has announced that the museum of the institute will remain open for visitors on Aug 14 from 9am to 4pm.
