HYDERABAD, Aug 9: People’s Party Parliamentarians leader Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said a 1983 MRD-like movement is needed to ensure return of party chairperson Benazir Bhutto to the country.

He was speaking at a seminar organized by the Sindh People’s Students Federation, Hyderabad city, on “Why is Benazir Bhutto living in exile and why has Asif Ali Zardari been incarcerated” at a hotel here on Friday night.

Criticizing President Gen Pervez Musharraf for amending the Constitution and introducing the Legal Framework Order which gives all the powers to a single person, the former Sindh minister said the rulers were using all methods to remain in power.

Referring of the Swiss court judgment, Prof N. D. Khan said the case in which Ms Bhutto and Mr Zardari were convicted was prepared by then National Accountability Bureau chairman Saifur Rehman during the Nawaz Sharif regime which was nothing but political victimization.

He reminded that the apex court had set aside the decision of Justice Abdul Qayoom, now retired, who had convicted Ms Bhutto and had ordered retrial of the case.

Mr Khan claimed that the government had spent thousands of dollars to seek conviction from the Swiss court in the same case.

The gathering adopted resolutions, demanding withdrawal of cases against Ms Bhutto and Mr Zardari and return of the party chairperson, condemning the attack on PPP MPA Ghulam Qadir Chandio in Nawabshah and demanding arrest of the assailants and calling for providing relief to rain victims.

NAZIM: District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman has said he is ready to work with the district relief committee although he disagreed with it.

The relief committee, appointed by the Sindh government for Hyderabad, comprises ministers and advisers and is headed by the adviser to the Sindh chief minister on home affairs, Aftab Ahmad Shaikh.

Talking to this correspondent on Friday, Mr Rafiquzzaman said he would attend the meeting called by Mr Shaikh on Saturday at the circuit house.

The district council in a resolution on Aug 6 had rejected the district relief committee, saying Nazims and Naib Nazims of district, taluka and union councils should be included in it.

The Nazim supported the inclusion of MPAs and MNAs from both the treasury and opposition benches in the committee for its smooth working.
