RAWALPINDI, Aug 5: Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Prof (Dr) Attaur Rehman on Tuesday said he had proposed to the government to introduce “electronic filing of FIR” through the internet to facilitate the complainants.

He said this while speaking at the first certificates and awards distribution ceremony of the Training Wing of Islamabad Capital Territory Police Cybercrime and IT Division held at Police Lines Headquarters here on Tuesday.

Dr Attaur Rehman said the electronic filing of the FIR would save evidence and time besides facilitating the complainants to get their cases registered with the police.

“Usually, the police avoid registration of FIRs that causes trouble to the public and damages evidence. Therefore, I had proposed to the government to introduce this system, which would not only save time and evidence but also help reduce the problems faced by the victims,” the HEC chairman told reporters after the ceremony.

In his speech, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Akram said the Information Technology had made available a wealth of information to the law-enforcement agencies to manage their resources and curb crime.

He said the ICT police were committed to modernisation, innovation and adopting state-of-the-art technologies and processes in discharge of their responsibilities. “The establishment of the ICTP Cybercrime and IT Division and efforts to make police personnel computer-literate symbolize our commitment to modernisation.”

Mr Akram said the establishment of a subsidiary branch of the Training Wing was under consideration. He said the aim of the branch would be to provide training at subsidised fees to the community in basic computer applications usage, graphics and designing, networking and information security principles.

Earlier, the SP Headquarters Taimoor Ali Khan highlighted the functioning of Training Wing of Islamabad Capital Territory Police Cybercrime and IT Division. He also informed the participants about the IT projects in the pipeline. These included networking for traffic police, integration of traffic penalty management and digital drivers licensing system.

He also informed the participants that 21 out of 33 cybercrime cases had been disposed of, 10 were under observation, while one was pending.

In the end, the chief guest distributed certificates and shields among the course participants.
