Rains play havoc in Khyber Agency

LANDI KOTAL, Aug 5: Torrential rains damaged property and the communication system in the Khyber Agency on Tuesday.

a heavy downpour coupled with strong winds hit Landi Kotal, Jamrud and Bara sub-divisions early in the morning.

More than 20 houses and around 10 shops were damaged by flood waters in Torkham, Shalman, Khujakhel and Sultankhel areas of Landi Kotal tehsil, while another six houses collapsed in Shalobar area of Bara tehsil.

An Afghan refugee sustained minor injuries when his house collapsed in Torkham.

The Loe Shalman telephone exchange’s tower was razed to the ground and its building partially damaged due to flood.

Traffic between Loe Shalman and Landi Kotal remained suspended due to high flood near the refugees camp.

The gushing flood water carried away two vehicles near Saidgee at Peerokhel, while a truck loaded with generators overturned near Sultankhel. Around 500 generators were washed away in flood water and the truck badly damaged.

Another car was badly damaged by flood near Bhagiarhee check post in Jamrud tehsil.

Traffic on the main Peshawar-Torkham highway remained suspended for more then six hours due to flood and land sliding at various points.

Power supply to Landi Kotal and adjoining area was also disrupted. Telephone lines were damaged at certain points but were later repaired.
