KARACHI: City Nazim inspects cleanliness work


KARACHI, Aug 5: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan visited on Tuesday different parts of Korangi and Gulshan-e-Iqbal Towns to inspect 10-day long health and cleanliness drive launched by the city government from Monday.

The city Nazim, accompanied by media men, visited union council 2 & 8 of Korangi Town and inaugurated plantation campaign in the town and inspected cleanliness work.

Talking to newsmen he said cleanliness work is aimed at making the port city beautiful and green and it would continue even after the declared deadline on August 13.

He further said we have initiated this campaign by using all available resources to improve conditions in city after rainfall devastated infrastructure of Karachi, besides presenting people the port city in an improved condition on the Independence Day.

Nazim of Korangi Town informed the newsmen that town administration was working in collaboration with all union councils for the success of health and cleanliness drive despite facing acute financial and human resources. “Cleanliness work in two union councils is being carried out on each day so that every union councils could be cleaned twice in the 10-day drive” he added

He further informed that a total of 250 tons of garbage was lifted daily and said that 250 sanitary and health staff were insufficient to carry out cleanliness work properly. He said services of more workers would be hired.

When his attention was drawn to existence of cattle pens in the area, he disclosed that notice would be issued to their owners in next few days and soon they would be shifted from area to some other place.

EDO Health Ali Nawaz Shaikh informed that six to seven thousand people had been treated in 27 camps established by the city government in different parts of the city during past six days by vaccination and giving medical aid to the people suffering from Hepatitis B, malaria and other diseases.

He maintained that health education is being imparted to masses through banners, posters and handbills depicting preventive measures to make people aware about precautionary steps.

The Nazim of UC-8, Zaman Town, appealed to the city Nazim to upgrade dispensary of the union council to the status of urban health centre so that people of area could get basic treatment of any diseases in their own area.

Later the city Nazim visited different parts of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town and inspected cleanliness work.

He inaugurated plantation campaign in Gulshan-e-Iqbal town by planting sapling at Jauhar Mor Road and informed that 400 saplings would be planted on this road.

Later City Nazim visited temporary garbage transfer station established by Gulshan Town administration.

Nazim Karachi also inspected beautification campaign at Rashid Minhas Road and he was informed that 1000 different kinds of saplings would be planted at this road.

Earlier City Nazim visited different parts of North Nazimabad Town and inspected work on cleanliness and health drive in town.

Meanwhile, a 21-member committee, formed on the directive of City Nazim Naimatullah Khan in connection with the health and sanitation campaign, met here on Tuesday and took certain important decisions.

Five sub-committees were formed for monitoring of cleanliness work in various towns. These committees will submit their inspection reports to the city nazim and EDO Health, who is convener of the committee.

The meeting was attended by District Infrastructure Officers of all the towns, ATOs Parks and other concerned officials.

Briefing the officials, EDO Health Dr Ali Nawaz Shaikh said they would have to pay greater attention on disposal of sewerage water, cleaning of sewerage lines, open drains and nullahs, daily lifting of garbage, cleaning of mud, carry out spray and sprinkling of lime.

He said the leakages in the water supply and sewerage lines will have to be identified immediately to check contamination of water.

He said every town will send its progress report daily with a copy to be faxed to the city nazim.

The EDO called for full attention on educational institutions, places of worship, markets and important roads with priority to draining out of rain water.

They were told to provide lists of available and required machinery.

The D.O. Protocol, Misbahuddin, said trees falling during rains would have to be removed immediately. He said trimming of trees would be carried out so that overhead cables remained safe and danger of snapping of wires and short circuiting was avoided.

On the occasion, it was strictly directed that ditches and trenches on town roads would be filled with stones and gravel (bajri) as carpeting could not be carried out during rain.

The committee will meet daily at 4pm at Civic Centre. On the directive of the city Nazim, the city government has also contacted other federal and provincial departments for attending the meeting daily for the purpose of coordination during the 10-day long campaign.—APP/PPI
