Pakistani boy shifted to welfare centre
NEW DELHI, Aug 2: A Pakistani boy who mistakenly crossed into Indian territory was switched to a child rehabilitation centre from a jail in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan, a report said on Saturday.
Muneer, 13, had been in security forces’ custody since June 26 when he was arrested by border rangers in Sriganganagar district.
After spending more than a month in police detention, a case was registered against him for violating the border on July 29, the United News of India reported.
Press reports have highlighted Muneer’s case and human rights groups have been pressing for his release and repatriation claiming that he had crossed into India mistakenly while grazing his cattle near the border.
Civil rights organization People’s Union for Civil Liberties approached the Rajasthan High Court which has sought details from the government regarding his case.
Responding to objections by human rights activists that the boy was in custody despite the law against detention of minors, officials ordered his shifting to a child rehabilitation centre in Bikaner town.—dpa
