KARACHI, Aug 2: Power riots erupted in Baghdadi, when some irate residents took to the streets in protest against an over 24-hour-long power breakdown on Saturday.
A resident of Lyari told Dawn at around 7.30pm on Saturday that Baghdadi, Moosa Lane and Daryabad had been without electricity since 7pm on Friday.
He added that residents had burnt tyres on Shah Bhittai Road in protest against, what they termed as, the inefficiency of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation.
A spokesman for the KESC said that three cable faults had occurred in these localities on Friday. He said that the power supply would be restored after repair by 10pm.
A resident of Defence, Phase VI, said that his locality had been without electricity since the previous night.
Meanwhile, the city received 11.5mgd less water than its usual share on Saturday because of a three-hours-long power failure at the Pepri pumping station, adds PPI.
A spokesman for the Water and Sanitation Department said that electricity had remained suspended from 4.40am to 8.05am at the Pepri pumping station.
He added that the power breakdown had been the cause of water shortage.
