KARACHI: Govt, MMA to discuss constitutional package
KARACHI, Aug 2: The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) President Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani has said the constitutional package to be prepared by the government will be presented in the next meeting between the MMA, Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, PML(Q) President Choudhry Shujaat Hussain and leaders of its allied parties for approval.
“In case the constitutional package was approved during the next meeting, only then a session of the National Assembly would be convened, where it (package) would be presented for adoption,” Mr Noorani told the PPI on Saturday, before leaving for Lahore.
He disclosed that preparation of the constitutional package was agreed at the meeting between the MMA, and the ruling allied parties in Islamabad on July 27.
“Since the government has agreed on the preparation of a constitutional package, it means they (government) have admitted that certain points of the Legal Framework Order (LFO) are disputed. MMA believes that the LFO is disputed and is not part of the constitution. The LFO could become part of the Constitution only when it was approved by two-third majority in the National Assembly,” Maulana Noorani contended.
He stressed that the MMA was striving for the supremacy of the Parliament and the restoration of the 1973 Constitution.
“We are very hopeful about the success of talks with the government, which would lead to the restoration of 1973 Constitution and the supremacy of the Parliament. This is also in the interest of Mr Zafarullah Jamali. I hope the Prime Minister will be successful in establishing parliamentary system of government in the country,” Maulana Noorani stated.
Answering a question, he claimed that as the MMA was the single largest opposition party, both in the National Assembly and the Senate, therefore, the leaders of opposition in the National Assembly and Senate should be from the MMA, which contested the October 2002 elections on one election symbol.—PPI
