KARACHI: Laparoscopy Discussed

KARACHI, July 29: A lecture was arranged on Tuesday on laproscopic surgery at the Sindh Institute of Urology.

Speaking on this occasion, consultant paediatric urologist at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, Dr Imran Mushtaq said that the laprscopic surgery was becoming more popular in Europe and the United States, adding that there would be an increase in application of laparoscopy for surgical procedures, with particular reference to paediatric urology.

Fifty per cent of all paediatric urological procedures were expected to be performed laparosopically in the near future, he said.

Dr Mushtaq said that these procedures were popular for cosmetic reasons as they left no scars, adding that laparoscopy had short convalescing period, enabling the patient to resume schools or jobs very early by comparison with normal surgical operations.

The procedure, he said, required a short hospital stay and patients can go home after one or two days.

Dr Imran Mushtaq had recently conducted a week-long Paediatric Laparoscopic Workshop at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT).

During the workshop, he performed more than 30 laparoscopic surgeries, including nephrectomies for damaged kidneys, orchidopexy for undescended testes, herniorrhaphies and laparoscopic repair of ambiguous genitalia.—APP
