ISLAMABAD, July 28: Third seeded Omer Babar on Monday stunned top seed Shahrukh Niazi to win the National Junior Invitational Tennis Tournament at the PTF Complex.
Omer, of Punjab, scored a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over his opponent who despite his good height and powerful shots did not seem to have an answer to his rival’s intelligent play.
The doubles title went to Shahrukh Niazi and Tanveer Ashiq who defeated the pair of Usman Ijaz and Amir Ali Khan 6-2, 6-4.
President of the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF), Syed Dilawar Abbas, said that this tournament and the month-long camp preceding it was an effort to hunt talent for the future. “The top two boys here would now be put into the Davis Cup camp alongside the senior players in order to gain experience.”
“We will continue to make similar efforts in future and if we are able to find a few good players through such an exercise, it would benefit us in the long run.”
The boys who made the grade were both the singles finalists but since Omer regretted he wouldn’t be able to attend the camp, Tanvir Ashiq was chosen.
Top 12 under-16 players took part in the tournament and the camp that was conducted by coaches Inamul Haq, Shah Mahmood and Mahboob Khan.
